How to Measure Wrapping Paper Correctly (And What to Do If It’s Too Short)

One of the most common gift wrapping mistakes is using the wrong amount of wrapping paper. Too little paper leaves exposed edges. Too much creates bulky folds that are hard to manage. Knowing how to measure wrapping paper correctly helps you wrap cleanly, reduce waste, and avoid last-minute frustration.
And if your paper still comes up short? There’s a simple fix for that too — especially when you’re wrapping with personalized wrapping paper that’s designed for clean folds and easy adjustments.
How Much Wrapping Paper Do You Need?
Calculate in 3 Easy Steps
Step 1: Measure the Box

Before cutting any paper, measure your box and note three dimensions:
Height (H) — how tall the box is
Width (W) — the side-to-side measurement
Length (L) — front-to-back measurement
These three numbers are all you need to calculate the right amount of wrapping paper.
Step 2: Cut the Paper Width

The paper width needs to cover the top of the box and both sides.
Formula: Box width + (2 × box height)
Example: For a box that’s 12 inches wide and 3 inches tall:12 + 3 + 3 = 18 inches
Cutting the paper to this width ensures full side coverage without excess bulk or bunching.
Step 3: Cut the Paper Length

The paper length should wrap completely around the box with a small overlap for taping.
Formula: (2 × box height) + (2 × box length) + overlap
We recommend about 2 inches of overlap.
Example: For a box that’s 3 inches tall and 4 inches long:3 + 4 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 16 inches
Quick Fit Check
Place the box face-down in the center of the paper. The edges should meet in the middle and overlap slightly before you cut.
Pro Tip
If you’re unsure, gently roll the box along the paper before cutting — it’s the easiest way to confirm you’ve got enough length without wasting paper.
Once your paper is measured correctly, the next step is calculating how much ribbon you need for the finishing wrap.
What to Do If Your Wrapping Paper Is Too Short
Even with careful measuring, it happens — especially when wrapping wide or oddly shaped gifts.
If your wrapping paper is too short, don’t start over. Instead, use the diagonal wrapping method, which allows you to fully cover the box by turning it at an angle.
